Aberrations of a librarian

Ezechiel Garcia-Romeu Company (France)

Clipa Theater thanks the French Institute in Tel Aviv for supporting Clipa Aduma Festival

It all begins and ends in a library. Which one is of little importance. A librarian has shut himself up in this library, and by dint of his accumulation of diverse and various knowledge, he is convinced that he can resolve the enigma of the creation of the world. Quite logically, in his opinion, since he has read all there is to read about everything. But his venture, in the manner of Flaubert's Bouvard and Pécuchet, will induce a type of deranged "consciousness", which is only equaled by the derangement of his mind.
The object of his reading is an aberrant, illogical mixture of scientific, poetic, dramatic and political texts. But something strange happens; these chaotic narratives, through the workings of a mysterious power, materialize in the strange dream of a botched creation of the world, teaming with misfits.
In this world, peopled by phantoms, the marionettes represent the various creatures; they appear and disappear chaotically according to the whims and ravings of our extraordinary librarian. They reflect his "aberrations", by inducing visions of presences, as in astronomy, where in fact there is nothing.
The spectators are gathered together like a group of initiates, who are privileged to share a great secret. The limited number of spectators, their nearness to the character and the objects that have come to life allow us to project ourselves into the infinitesimally small: breathing, shivering, tiny gesticulations all help to construct a new dream world.
The Librarian stands at the center of the performance, as a veritable Deus ex machina, manipulating the objects of life and death, and of love, on his desk, from the distance of the stars, in the form of the universe...

Ezechiel Garcia-Romeu is one of the leading puppeteers in France, born in Argentina in 1961. Alongside adult and children puppet shows, he has directed several operas. His creations are characterized by precision and rich aesthetics both in design and in operation of his puppets, as well as unique use of the puppeteer himself as performer on stage.
